NSFAS is the principal funder of tertiary education in South Africa, granting study loans to poor students enabling them to study at universities and universities of technology. Studietrust is a first tier NGO partner of NSFAS and annually administer more than R6 million in student loans to needy students.
UNHCR’s higher education scholarship programme, known by its acronym DAFI, plays an integral role in enabling refugees worldwide to access higher education. Since its inception in 1992, the DAFI programme has grown considerably, enabling over 2,240 refugee students annually to study at universities and colleges in 41 countries of asylum in 2014. The scholarships of around 100 refugee students sponsored by DAFI in South Africa are administered by StudyTrust, the UNHCR’s South African implementing partner.
Socionext offers world class hands-on training in social innovation, entrepreneurship skills development and rapid prototyping based on the Lean Start-up methodology. StudyTrust has partnered with Socionext since 2009 and the annual Social Entrepreneurship Challenge is offered as a programme of the StudyTrust Winter Seminar.
The Sumbandila Scholarship Trust is a non-profit organisation in the field of secondary education which provides both Full Scholarships to Ridgeway College in Makhado as well as an Educational Outreach Programme to impoverished rural children in the Vhembe District of South Africa’s Limpopo Province. The Venda word “Sumbandila” literally means “point out the road’ or “Show the Way”. Sumbandila’s vision is “To transform the lives of underprivileged children with exceptional potential and create entrepreneurs and leaders who make significant contributions to society and their own communities.” Since 2013 when learners who came through the Sumbandila programme receive tertiary bursaries through StudyTrust.
